Lauded for his "boyish charm" and "hearty baritone" voice, Jonathan Christopher has led quite an exciting life thus far in the worlds of opera and musical theater. He recently won critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland for his “stunning lead vocal” (ScotsGay Magazine) portraying Collins in Rent through Uncompromising Artistry Productions.
A 2014 Young Artist with New York's Caramoor Bel Canto Festival, Jonathan has held residencies with Michigan Opera Theater, Syracuse Opera, the Pine Mountain Music Festival (Michigan), the Green Mountain Opera Festival (Vermont), and the Janiec Opera Company at the Brevard Music Center (North Carolina). Operatic highlights include the roles of Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro (ConcertIA, Iowa), Morales in Carmen (New York Opera Exchange), Baron Duphol in La Traviata (Michigan Opera Theater), Sonora in La Fanciulla del West (Eugene Opera), the title role in Don Giovanni and Marcello in La Bohème (Opera McGill), Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro (Vero Beach Opera, Florida; Bay View Musical Festival, Michigan; the University of Michigan; and Janiec Opera Company, North Carolina), Guglielmo in Così fan tutte (Opera Breve; La Villa della Musica, Milan, Italy), and Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte (Pine Mountain Music Festival).
Also an avid actor, Jonathan won an Outstanding Acting by an Ensemble Award at the Planet Connections Theater Festivity for his lead role in the musical Why Don’t I Have A Girlfriend! He has performed with Skylight Music Theater (Jim and The Undertaker in The Gershwin's Porgy and Bess), The Sondheim Center’s Way Off Broadway Company in Iowa, as Donkey in Shrek the Musical, The Emcee in Cabaret, and Smudge in Forever Plaid Presents Plaid Tidings! Roles including Mr. Lindquist in A Little Night Music, The Proprietor in Assassins, Anthony and Sweeney in Sweeney Todd, and Coalhouse Walker, Jr., in Ragtime, round out Jonathan’s experience in the world of musical theatre.
In concert Jonathan toured throughout the Veneto region of Italy, Salzburg, Austria, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, upstate New York, and Bermuda, through multiple recital series and music festivals. Jonathan was a member of the group Gospel 4, performing Gospel music to Italian audiences during the 2015 Christmas season, and has also been a Guest Artist for the opera band The Cast throughout Germany. Solo orchestral and choral performances include Orff’s Carmina Burana, Bach’s Magnificat, Brahms’ Requiem and Liebeslieder Walzer, Dvorak’s Mass in D, and Stravinsky’s A Soldier’s Tale.
Jonathan received a B.M. in Vocal Performance from the University of Michigan and a M.M. in Opera Performance from McGill University, under the tutelage of Daniel Washington and Sanford Sylvan, and continues to be inspired by every new opportunity, whether in theatre, opera, or concert.
